A blonde woman in the shower is checking the flow of the running water with her palm. A ‘Vitaminata’ lavender-scented filter is fitted between the mixer tap and the shower hose. In the background are lemons and lavender, whilst water stains can be seen on the shower screen and tiles.

A shower filter works when it addresses the problem in your home's water. So before buying, take a look at the water coming out of your shower and write down what you would like to change.

What a shower filter does

A shower filter is a small cartridge between the mixer tap and the shower hose. Water flows through its filling, which holds back some impurities before they reach your skin and hair.

Vitaminata filters:

  • hold back iron and fine impurities;
  • soften the water;
  • contain vitamin C (except the unscented "Pure Water");
  • add a scent to your shower – choose from several fragrances.

A shower filter is not a whole-house water treatment system and does not treat skin conditions. It is meant to make your everyday shower more pleasant.

How to tell if you need one

Take a look at your bathroom:

  • White limescale on the shower glass, tap or kettle points to hard water – it contains a lot of calcium and magnesium.
  • Brownish stains in the sink or bath often point to iron.
  • Tight-feeling skin after a shower and shampoo that barely lathers are also common signs of hard water.

We wrote more about this in Hard water and iron.

If you want exact figures, check the data published by your water supplier or have your water tested in a lab. If your water comes from a private well and contains a lot of iron, you may need a whole-house filter – a shower filter would then be an addition, not a replacement.

What customers notice

Our customers often notice that with the filter their hair is easier to manage and blonde hair no longer turns yellow from iron.

Every home's water is different, so results can vary. It is best to judge after a few weeks of use: how your skin feels, how your hair looks, and whether there is less limescale on the shower.

How to decide

  1. Write down what bothers you: limescale, brown stains, dry skin, or simply wanting a more pleasant shower.
  2. If it is hard water or iron, a shower filter is an easy way to start.
  3. Pick a scent you like – that part is down to taste.

Installation takes a few minutes and needs no tools – see how to connect. Read about the ingredients here, and when to replace the filter here. Start with one filter and judge the difference yourself.
